WORKOUT MOTIVATION - FRANK MEDRANO

Respect Frank Medrano!

//I saw this video for the first time yesterday... and I think I ended up seeing it three times.

This is some seriously hard-core stuff, so if muscles, fitness and building ain't your thing, this post is probably not for you!

Me on the other hand, I' a huge fan, and I'm sitting here with my jawline scraping the floor - wow!  This guy is totally awesome!  Absolutely insane!  Talk about having a hundred percent control over his body.  Seeing this, and realizing that I whine about 45 minutes on the treadmill?  Ha ha ha, yeah right!  Time to kick myself out the door and over to the gym is more like it.

Respect Frank Medrano - you seriously rock, man.//

WORKOUT DIARY & PLANNING

Thumbs up!

//I have to say, that even though I'm very fond of apps and keeping everything digital, I'm really loving my new workout diary from Get inspired.  I'm actually only using this while working out now, for tracking, accessing workout routines, and taking notes.
So far I actually prefer this diary to any app I've used so far, and it's by far the easiest way to get a complete overview.  Thumbs up!  Would totally recommend this to all you Norwegian reading people ;)
The only negative thing about it has to be that it has way to few pages.... if you had the option to buy empty pages to add to the different sections, it would have been perfect.//

//I always fill in a complete week schedule, with individual and detailed program per session, and closely keep an eye on progress.

It's very nice to have week by week logged with all details - makes it easier to see where you need to push extra for the next session.
In the Heavy Duty principle it is absolute key to go as heavy as you can possible manage, so taking notes of weights is important.  Trust me, not much makes you more motivated then when you realize you're suddenly lifting 10 kgs more then just a short time ago. That is an awesome feeling.
Heavy Duty stays true to it's name and is as heavy can be, but I love it!

If you notice a drop in weights, then something's off - time to check the weekly schedule and start counting days between the sessions and keeping in mind the different muscle groups.  It's a typical sign that the body isn't getting enough rest.
I hit the wall once after I started my new routines.  I overdid it, and put sessions to close together.
My entire body was aching and complaining, and did not co-operate on budging those weights.  A sure sign to do some adjustments to the schedule.  A few minor adjustments, and I was back on track.

Often all that's needed is just a little tweaking. ;)//

//So far I still haven't managed to complete a week exactly the way I planned it, but that's just how life is. You adapt.  Things always change, you constantly learn new things, and you get to know your own body better day by day.
One of the things of my agenda has been to get more cardio done, but so far it's definitely not going as planned...

Firstly, I added a new leg exercise that totally killed my legs (in a good way), so I wasn't able to walk properly for three days... Remember the picture of me with lets up high while knitting? Yeah, that's the one.
Second, today I headed to the treadmill after some Heavy Duty with my PT, thinking all is well in this world.
A few minutes of warming up, and everything is running smoothly... until I start the actual intervals, and my right him completely cramps up and hurts like crazy. So that, as they say, was that.
Ha ha ha, talk about amazing treadmill session! ;)

Luckily for me I know I just need to give it some time, and go again.  When your body speaks, you should always listen, and be patient.  I've finally learned that after my back injury... I think ;)
A few more days, and I'll give it another go!  :)//

DAGENS ØKT // TODAYS SESSION:
Tredemølle - Oppvarming // Treadmill - warming up
Skidrag // Straight arm Pulldowns
Nedtrekk // Pulldowns Wide & Narrow grip
Hammer Strength - Roing - 2arm // Hammer Strength - 2 arm Row
Hammer Strength - Roing - 1arm // Hammer Strength - 1 arm Row
Hammer Strength - Nedtrekk // Hammer Strength Pulldown
Reverse Cable Cross
Concentration Curl - Dumbbell

//Over to something much more important - playtime with my baby girl!

You forget doing any planning in this house without a fluffy flour legged assistant.  As I'm writing this, she's halfway on top of the keyboard and my left hand... :)//

WHAT I'M UP TO THESE DAYS

Ha en super tirsdag dere! :)

//Yeah, that's me today.... totally exhausted.

I haven't even finished my first week on the new workout program, and my body is protesting like mad, trying to convince me that working out hard is not cool... which of course, I ignore (at least for now since at this point in time I put it down as whining, and my body should just get over it and suck it up).

The Heavy Duty Principle is pretty darn tough to be absolutely honest, it seriously burns all over.  If for sure can't be compared to the previous workout sessions I was doing - that was basically cosy-snuggle-hour compared to this!  :)

It'll be all good though, I know that for sure, but it's reeeally tough right now.  My back is behaving so far, but the rest of my body is acting like a 5 year old kid that is chanting "I don't wanna, I-don't-wanna-I-don't-wannaaaa ".
My arms were all shaky yesterday, and I haven't been able to knit - my arms are way too tired!

Today is my first (ever?) long low intensity (thank god) cardio session on the treadmill, and as I'm sure you know, I really really don't like cardio.  To keep me company I'm digging up an old classic - Desperate Housewives, season 1!  It's been a long time since season 1!  :)
Thankfully it's only those 45 minutes on the gym program today, and to be honest, I really hope the rest of the day is extremely lazy.

Tomorrow the man in the house is having a birthday, so it's time to hone those Suzy-Homemaker-skills of mine!  Cake baking time, coming up!  :)  Not just any cake mind you, but a Portuguese wet cake - exiting!
No healthy, protein with no sugar and no wheat, for the husbands birthday - that's a no-can-do.  Here it must be all old school sugar and wheat style baking to have a "proper-portuguese-cake".  ;)
I'll share recipe if it turns out well!  :)

Well... this post turned out a lot longer than planned... could it have something to do with the fact that next up on the program is a certain treadmill? ;)

Anywho,
Have a smashing Tuesday my good peeps! :) //

SQUATS - FINALLY

It feels good to slowly getting back to proper work-out routines again, even though my triceps aren't agreeing with me on the subject.  Agreeing or not, today was a good opportunity to do a nice long session to kick the rest of my body in to post-vacation mode!

Because of my back injury I've been taking it easy in the gym for the last few months in general, but today I saw some really promising signs for the time to come.  I was finally able to do some proper squats with barbell today, and I couldn't be happier!  Whoop, Whoop! :)  Patience is key.

WORKOUT SESSION
Treadmill: 10 min, steep incline, fast walk

Squats (with varying weight): 20x2, 15x2, 8x2
Bench Press - Barbell: 8x3
Bench Press - Dumbells: 10x3
Flyes: 8x2
Cable Crossovers: 13x2
Dumbbell Curl: 8x3
Cable Curl: 8x2

Next week it's PT time!  Time to tighten up the program, getting back to proper heavy duty routines, and get things cookin'!

Excited?  Yes!

CARDIO IN THE DARK

As the title says, today it was time for some cardio in the dark!  Well, not voluntarily.

It was really strange stomping away on the treadmill in the dark along side other people, their faces slightly green, lit by the display on the machines.
After a while the light started going on and off as electricians started to try to fix the issue I'm sure.  Oh well, it was for sure a new workout experience!

Feeling really silly doing the TRX Crunch

Today was the first day back in the gym for about four weeks... and let me just say that I wish it hadn't been four weeks.  It was pretty tough. The little time I spent on the treadmill felt really heavy which I found rather scary to be honest.  Intervals is going to be an absolute pain, but hey, at least it seems that I'm able to actually use the treadmill again now after my back injury!  *keeping-fingers-crossed*

I decided that I needed to add some more abs exercises to my program, but I need to be really careful because of my back.  At the moment I'm trying and failing.  The Torso (Russian) Twist with medicine ball was an absolute failure as the back position caused way to much strain on my lower back, but maybe the TRX Crunch will do the trick!

WORKOUT SESSION:
Treadmill: 10 min, steep incline, fast walk

Shoulder Press - 10x3
Side Lateral Raise 8x3
Tricep Pusdowns 10x3
Shrugs 10x3
Cable Chop 8x2
TRX Oblique Crunch 5x3
Plank 2x 30sec
Leg raise 3x7

yours truly a.k.a ms-happy-camper

Overall a pretty good start after the summer! I just can't wait to build some more muscle and finally start seeing some serious defined goodness!

LISTEN - LEARN - WAIT

After preparing the pots for plants, crawling around outside starting the full clean-up of the balcony, a bit late yes I know, my back was feeling a bit iffy....

The day after I headed over to the gym where I pulled a 2 hour session, as I was high on sugar after having some YT products, and my back suddenly just snapped!

I was being careful about form, and all was good, but when sitting leaned backwards doing some leg extensions, I just couldn't get back up.  I couldn't move and had a terrible shooting pain in my lower back.

After a short while I managed to wriggle out of the chair, and the pain subsided.   Just proves how careful you have to be.  I've been working on my form with my PT, and I should be executing all exercises technically correct - no bent back anywhere.

For the next week I'll be on painkillers and using ice several times per day - and stay far far faar away from dead-lifts and rowing exercises.

I was so disappointed that I didn't get to do dead-lifts yesterday, but doing that would have been crazy - I have problems leaning over to put my shoes on...

Made myself a little graphic for the occasion  :)

Time to let the back rest, and let the legs, chest and arms do the work... at least for a week or so, but today will be work-out free.

Alight, I think it's time for me to go and put some more ice on this complaining thing.  ;)
Hope you're having a great Thursday!

FITNESS MOTIVATION FOR WOMEN - WITH BETTER BODIES & PAULINE NORDIN

For some reason I always find it hard to come by good fitness motivation for women.

It somehow usually ends up being way too much "lady-bits", and not enough muscle - it kinda just ends up screaming "hoochie-mama" instead of "strong woman" if you know what I mean.

Don't get me wrong - I think it's wonderful that women are proud of their bodies!  All that hard work and dedication - of course it should be shown off - but it can be done with some dignity and self respect! :)

I get that sex sells and that guys love having women posing like a centerfold... but can't we get some tough women who is really working it to motivate us fellow women?  Having the target group being  the women, and not the men?
That's what I want to see more of - strong and empowered women who don't feel the need to loose all their clothing.

So far I've found Better Bodies to be a good source of motivation (and don't get me started on their amazing workout apparel ♥ Talk about love at first sight ♥) - I love their visual style, tough and gritty without "The Hulk" factor, and I find their style a bit different from the rest.  Check it out.

Here is one tough lady featured in the video above, which seems to be the No-Nonsense type - Pauline Nordin.  I'm crossing my fingers that she sticks to her image - love it!

"International top fitness model and television personality Pauline Nordin is literally ExerciseTV’s most butt-busting trainer.  "

"Nordin left Sweden to move to America.  She authored “The Fighter Diet” , an e-book which presented a gutsy FAT loss system that brought her fans and attention in the United States.  She began appearing in features and on the cover of American fitness magazines, which highlighted her tough but effective no-nonsense style."

"“You can diet all you want, but you will become a smaller version of your fat self. Training is the best thing you can do for your body,” is the advice frequently offered by Nordin.  Her dedication and style put her on the radar for ExerciseTV, part of NBCUniversal, which signed her up to be a trainer for the leading digital fitness network.

“When you have a pair of nice glutes you feel like you own the world.  Your butt is going to be toned, and sexy, and tight – not jiggly,” pledges the straight-talking Nordin."

Alright, I'm off to the gym - it's squat time!   :)

Have a good one!

FITOCRACY - A LAYER OF FUN TO FITNESS

So!  I've come across something pretty cool!  I got introduced to this a few weeks ago, and thought I'd give it a go.  Totally worth checking out!  Good tip to all who work out - adds an extra layer of fun to it all.

FITOCRACY - for all of us who likes fitness, gadgets and fun!

//fitocracy.com
★ Featured in CNN, TechCrunch, Lifehacker, Kotaku, The NY Observer, Men's Journal, Mashable, The Economist ★

Fitocracy is a free online game and social network that aims to use "gamification" to help users improve their fitness - having people work together, share experiences, compete and join in challenges - in other words; a lot of fun!

You can access it on your Iphone or Android by downloading a free app - this way you can track and save all your workouts while in the gym.

You can also save your routines so that they are much easier to access later.   I like to add on the go when and if I'm having any breaks during work out, and then I finish editing at home from their website.  Check it out here //Link.

It really is pretty fun when you're competing against friends as you get points for all your work outs, and you start leveling up and finishing challenges, or "become more awesome" as Fitocracy puts it.

You are rewarded for the hard work you put in. The longer and more often you workout, the more points you earn which in turn become rewards or badges.

Knowledge
Fitocracy connects you to the combined knowledge of over half a million of the world’s best fitness coaches, nutrition experts, and other folks from a wide variety of fitness backgrounds. Like the hundreds of thousands before you, you can finally turn, “I can’t do this,” into “I RULE!”

Tracking
If you don’t track, how do you know if you’re improving? Track all your activities, whether that’s walking up the stairs, olympic lifting, or that dance party you had with your friends last night. Keep an eye on your progress and personal records with some nifty performance graphs.

Motivation
Activities earn you points. Points lead to level ups. Earn badges for significant achievements. The community will reward your hard work with props. Groups are small communities where you can talk about the things that really matter to you.

Fun
Get competitive with friends. Take part in Challenges. Or, if you’re a Fitocracy Hero, you can even slap other fitocrats with a velvet glove for a one-on-one Duel. Get 10 friends to sign up using your invite link, and a month of Hero is yours for the taking! Also, robots are awesome and we have one. He’s called FRED.

Tri-Sets & Kitty under Rug

And it's Friday!  We like Fridays ;)

Started the day off strong with a long back session in the gym this morning.  I just have to say, if you haven't tried out doing a Tri-set before, you should really give it a go.  It really packs a punch.

Today's Session
Treadmill
Bent-Over Row - Barbell
Tri-set:
  • Lateral Pulldowns
  • Seated Cable Rows
  • Straight-Arm Pulldown
Cable Crossover - Upper Back
One Arm Row - Standing
Row - Standing

Love this saying about morning work-outs!

A Tri-set is when you line up three exercises in a row.  You don't have any break in between the three different exercises, you go from exercise to exercise without stopping.

In the example above I did:
  • Max out on Pulldowns, so about 10 reps.
  • I got off the machine and went straight over to the seated cable rows and maxed it out at about 10 reps
  • Then, still with no break, went directly and did10 Pulldowns.

After this, it's time for a break.  Repeat to a total of 3 times.  Trust me, on the third set, your muscles are nice and tender, and your reps will be halved which is fine.  Really good exercise.  :)

Classic Cloud - managing to get under the bathroom rug.. typical cat ;)

Cloud wishes you a great Friday, and an excellent weekend!

Camo Cravings - Better Bodies

Kicking off the new week with a nice long session in the gym this morning.  Today it was time for some heavy duty chest and biceps.

Today's Session:
Treadmill
Bench Press - Dumbbells
Bench Press - Barbell, Flat
Flyes - Dumbbells
Dips
Cable Crossover, Chest
Cable Crossover, Upper Back
Dumbbell Curl - Standing
Barbell Curl - Standing
Cable Curl - Standing

I'm sure you've heard people, especially representing the big sport brands, going on and on about how much better you'll feel after filling your wardrobe with new and colorful work-out garments, how it will boost your motivation and mood... a little miracle in fabric form.  You know what, the funny thing is that they're actually right.  I wouldn't go as far as calling it a miracle mind you, but a boost, absolutely!

I swapped my black larger work-out T-shirt for a more fitted shock pink version.... and it actually made me feel better.   They're exactly the same T-shirt, only difference is size and color.

I'm all for black, but I have to say that wearing a bright pink t-shirt feels surprisingly great in the morning!  Strange feeling when a color makes you want to bounce? Ha ha! :)

Now, staying on the same subject, here you have some serious motivation.
These guys below are some of the fitness models working together with the brand Better Bodies.  To me, these guys are really inspiring.  Being able to mold yourself to this level takes a lot of dedication and will.

...I think it's going to take a while before I reach that level, but hey we all need goals right?  ;)

Well, as I mentioned above, there are other forms of motivation while we work for better bodies, and what's better then some new work-out wear from Better Bodies! ;)
(ouch, my humor is rising to new hights.)

But honestly, I've fallen head over heals for their camo tops for women. I love army inspired clothing, but I think it's easy to go overboard with large jackets and pants.  I prefer to tone it down.
I've been looking all over for some descent tank tops or T-shits, and finally I came across these beauties at Better Bodies.
